Experience extraordinary living

The Yoga Teachings of Patanjali

Undisturbed calmness of mind is attained
by cultivating friendliness toward the happy,
compassion for the unhappy,
delight in the virtuous,
and indifference toward the wicked.
                                                           The Yoga Teaching of Patanjali.
When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project,
all your thoughts break their bonds;
your mind transcends limitations,
your consciousness expands in every direction,
and you find yourself in a new, great and wonderful world.
Dormant forces, faculties and talents become alive
and you discover yourself to be a greater personby far than you ever dreamed yourself to be.
                                                                                                                 The Yoga Teaching of Patanjali.
Patanjali was the great Indian sage, who lived thousands of years ago. His writings opened the doors to experiencing the greater Reality available beyond the limits of the logical mind. Osho calls Patanjali an 'Einstein in a world of Buddhas'.
Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, one of the classical guides to spiritual life, and the most fundamental text on Yoga, dates back to the period between the second and the end of the third centuries.
It seems to have transcended time, remaining amongst the most
influential spiritual writings in Yoga. It has a vital message for everyone who is sincerely looking for a meaning behind the apparent chaos and tragedy of our everyday life.
Patanjali's great contribution was to compile and systematise existing knowledge on Yoga, and give Yoga a philosophical shape that allowed it to compete with other contemporary schools of thought. Students and teachers of yoga can expect to be given a full picture of what yoga is, what its aims are, how it can be practiced, what powers can be attained by it and finally, what liberation consists of. It is a work of great intellectual philosophy and deep understanding of the principles underlying the ultimate Truth. it is one that you will find deeply satisfying, stimulating and absorbing.
The 196 verses (sutras) of the text are short aphorisms, which are grouped in four chapters that explain
  • the nature of higher consciousness, the mystery beyond mind (transformation)
  • the practice of yoga, the science of living (love)
  • the supernormal powers, known as siddhis, that are gained through this practice (energy) and
  • the state of final emancipation (happiness).
This knowledge has inspired Yoga practitioners for centuries.
The Yoga Sutras, from its origins in Vedic literature, over 5000 years old, are the transformational key to open into the here and now, and provide tools for our future. Here is a chance to explore the seminal scriptures of the Yoga Sutras and sutra study. (An excellent tool for following this teaching is the book: How to know God by Swami Prabhavananda and Christopher Isherwood.) Shantiji works thorough the chapters, sutra by sutra (stanza by stanza), unpacking and discussing the language and concepts, drawing upon her own translation in her inspired teachings.

THE YOGA SUTRAS, 2017-18 with Shanti Gowans

The Yoga Sutras are the most fundamental texts on Yoga. They were compiled around 400 CE by a Sanskrit scholar and scribe, known as Patanjali who documented his material about yoga from rishis and sages who had experienced Truth first hand. Arranged in four chapters, or padas, the Yoga Sutra elucidates the basic teachings of yoga in short verses called sutras.

The study will be conducted over 40 weeks, during which Shantiji will explore the nature of higher consciousness, the practice of yoga, (in the second chapter Patanjali presents the ashtanga, or eight-limbed system of yoga, for which yoga is famed), supernormal powers that can arise from these practices, and the state of final liberation. This knowledge has inspired and greatly assisted Yoga practitioners for centuries.

In the first cornerstone of The Yoga Sutras, we use deep meditation to travel through to the aims of Yoga.

In the second cornerstone upon which the house of yoga is built, we start some very practical yoga methods to attain this meditation, and the wisdom that rides it.

These two chapters together reflect yoga as a union of inner, mental practices and outer, physical methods or activities.
The word 'sadhana', means practice to reach spiritual illumination. Sadhana pada carries the torch for both the spiritually evolved and the uninitiated. It teaches the complete beginner, who knows no yoga, how s/he may rise, through her sadhana to the level of high aspirants.
Here the art of practice,'abhyasa', is fully laid out to uphold the practitioner in the uninterrupted maintensnce of her practice, to guide her around pitfalls so that she may gain greater clarity by acute observation and reflection, and immaculate precision in practice.
